The nightcap of the opening day of the Sweet 16 was probably the most atheltic one. Holmes and Paducah Tilghman are stocked with gifted athletes, and the tempo and style of play reflected that. It was a very fast paced game that included many steals, fastbreaks, high flying dunks, no look passes, and big time blocks. It was a battle for all 32 minutes, and a winner wasn't really decided until Holmes used their scoring ability to pull away in the final minutes to win 57-48. With their leading scorer in foul trouble early, Holmes was led in scoring by Austin Hill, who contributed 26 points and 7 rebounds. The same is true of the Paducah Tilghman Blue Tornado. Leading scorer Stefon Perry (15 ppg) was held in check by the Bulldogs' lock down man defense and was held to 8 points on 3 of 13 shooting. Issac McClure stepped up for Tilghman to give them a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Both teams didn't shoot particularly well, Holmes shot just over 35% and Tilghman was held to 30%, well off both teams' season averages which were just under 50%.
